History of Radio ABF – Alternative Bass Fréquence
Radio ABF (Alternative Bass Fréquence) is an iconic French webradio dedicated to electronic music, particularly dance, house, electro, techno, bass, and related genres. It embodies the pioneering spirit of the very first online radios in France at the turn of the 2000s.
Origins (1999–2000): The beginnings under Loïc Molo’s impulse
Radio ABF was born from the vision of Loïc Molo (known online as @LoicMolo), a passionate radio enthusiast and electronic music lover. Loïc began his radio journey in 1999 at Radio FG, where he worked in production and weekend show hosting. At a time when ADSL was rare and streaming was in its infancy, he already offered early listeners downloadable 30-minute “home-made” shows (funk, reggae, hip-hop, techno…) — a primitive form of podcasting before the term even existed.
In 2000, Loïc officially launched Radio ABF – Alternative Bass Fréquence, a live webradio focused on electronic music. The ABF-ALTERNATIVE BASS FREQUENCE association was officially registered on June 2, 1999 (headquartered in France), with the mission of promoting electronic artists through the website, radio, events, and other initiatives.
From 2000 to 2008, ABF delivered a sharp, alternative programming that quickly built a loyal community thanks to its independence and high audio quality. It became one of the true pioneers of French webradios specialized in electronic/dance music.
Evolution into M2 Radio (2008)
In 2008, the project evolved. In partnership with Alexandre Martinat (founder of Fréquence3), Loïc decided to create a broader bouquet with multiple music themes. Radio ABF officially ceased broadcasting on January 1, 2008, to make way for M2 Radio, an association under the 1901 law that incorporated several webradios (including ex sub-brands like ABF Underground for electro/techno and ABF Analog for 80s music). M2 Radio then became a major player in French digital radio, mastering the full technical chain (broadcasting, servers, streaming).
The comeback and relaunch in 2026
After years of absence (or hibernation) under the ABF name, Radio ABF made a powerful return in 2026, relaunched by Loïc Molo himself — the historical founder and current manager. This revival is driven by a desire to go back to the roots: authentic bass/electronic programming, DJ sets, live sessions, and a strong, active community.
As of January 2026, Radio ABF is live and accessible at https://radioabf.com with high-quality streams (HD, SD, etc.), featuring concepts such as ABF Club, residencies and guests (Tsunoo, LP Remix, Betty Mix, JNOES, DJ JOEE…), and international spotlights (Made in Japan, etc.). It remains 100% independent, free, and passionate — true to the spirit of the web radio pioneers.
